China Southern Power Grid: Our First Megawatt Grid-Side Power Storage Station Has Achieved On-Grid Power Transmission

With the continuous improvement of electrochemical energy storage technology, its application in power systems has become more extensive. Electrochemical energy storage refers to the technology of storing electrical energy during the low-valley period through a chemical medium and then using it later. It is mainly used to alleviate problems such as overload of the grid during peak load hours. Moreover, This type of energy storage system generally uses lithium iron phosphate or a ternary lithium battery as the single units.

On November 20th, the 110 kV Transformer Substation in Tantou, a subsidiary body of China Southern Power Grid Shenzhen Power Supply Bureau, was successfully connected to the Grid with its power storage system.

The successful implementation of this energy storage system can provide millisecond response to the Shenzhen Western Power Grid. And it has a maximum charge-discharge time of two hours, providing 10 MWh of reserve power, which is equivalent to about 1,000 residential customers. Therefore, it can alleviate the problem of power supply limitation in areas where power grid construction is difficult.

What is the lithium-ion pouch cell?

Lithium-ion pouch cells are liquid lithium-ion batteries with a polymer shell. Unlike other batteries, the outer surface of this battery has a flexible packaging material (aluminum-plastic composite film), which is the most critical and technically-difficult material in Lithium-ion pouch cells. The packaging material and structure of this battery brings it many advantages.

Pouch cell has the following advantages:

• High safety: its electrolyte is almost leak-free, and in case of accident, the soft-packed battery will only bulge, instead of exploding like a hard-shell battery;
• Good cycle performance: pouch cell has a longer cycle life.

GeePower® Lithium-ion Battery Knowledge Column

The lithium battery protection board consists of protective IC, MOSFET, transistors, resistors & capacitors, PCB and some heat sink devices. Its role is to keep the battery running normally, like preventing battery failure caused by overcharging, overdischarging, short circuit, which will result in battery smoking & burning, even an explosion.

What are the functions of the lithium battery protection board?

1. Overcharge protection. Different systems of batteries vary in their overcharge protection voltage. In general, the overcharge protection voltage of lithium iron phosphate battery is 3.65V~3.85V, and 4.2V~4.35V for lithium cobalt oxide battery, lithium manganese oxide battery, and ternary polymer lithium battery.
2. Overdischarge protection. Overdischarge protection voltage of lithium iron phosphate is 2-2.5V, and 2.3V-2.9V for lithium cobalt oxide battery, lithium manganese oxide battery, and ternary lithium polymer battery.
3. Short circuit protection. It is determined by the parameters of the IC and MOSFET.
4. Overcharge recovery voltage. IC has this function, and generally recovery voltage is 0.1~0.2V lower than the protection voltage.
5. Overdischarge recovery voltage. Some ICs do not have this function. When overdischarge occurs, it needs to recharging.
6. Short circuit protection delay is generally only a few ten milliseconds.
7. Equalization function. The purpose of equalizing is to ensure that each battery can be fully charged, in order to extend the service life, and maximize the role of the battery. At present, equalizing charging is very common.
